海南省博物馆位于海口市国兴大道南侧，东临南渡江，西接美舍河，是规划建设的海口文化公园的组成部分，建成后与海南省图书馆和海南省文化艺术中心共同组成海口文化公园的主体建筑，是海口市标志性建筑之一。三个平展的形体表达了一种无限的延展性,象征着海南的历史发展的无限广阔性。三个形体所产生两个矩形的虚空间又恰恰象征着无限的包容性，表达了海纳百川,吸引天下来客的意义。
Hainan Museum is situated on the south side of Guoxing Avenue in Haikou, bordering the Nandu River to the east and the Meishe River to the west, forming part of the planned Haikou Cultural Park. Together with HainanLibraryand Hainan Provincial Culture and Art Center, it constitutes the main buildings of Haikou Cultural Park and ranks among Haikou’s landmark architecture.Its three horizontal volumes embody infinite extensibility, symbolizing the boundless prospects of Hainan’s historical development. The two rectangular voids created between the three volumes symbolize boundless inclusiveness, conveying the spirit of embracing diverse cultures and welcoming visitors from all over the world.
建筑由一、二期建筑构成，总建筑面积近43000平方米，占地面积60余亩。建筑高度25米，地上3层。建成后的省博展厅数量达20个之多，最大的展厅面积达1200平方米，最小的展厅面积近230平方米。近270个座位的学术报告厅，还有大面积对公众开放的休闲公共空间以及280个车位的停车场。
The complex consists of Phase-I and Phase-II buildings, with a total floor area of nearly 43,000 square meters and a site area of over 60 mu(about 4 hectares). The building stands 25 meters high with three floors above ground. The completed museum houses as many as 20 exhibition halls: the largest covers 1,200 square meters, while the smallest is nearly 230 square meters. It features an academic lecture hall with approximately 270 seats, large public leisure spaces open to visitors, and a parking lot with 280 parking spaces.

2008年11月15日海南省博物馆新馆正式落成开放。
The new building of the Hainan Museum was officially completed and opened to the public on November 15, 2008.
2012年11月省博二期工程开始动工,建筑面积25000平方米。
Construction of the museum’s Phase-II project commenced in November 2012, with a floor area of 25,000 square meters.
2016年7月二期落成进行移交，移交后二期展馆进入展陈制作阶段。
Phase-II was completed and handed over in July 2016, after which its exhibition halls entered the exhibition fabrication phase.
2017年5月18日二期三个基本陈列《南溟泛舸》《方外封疆》《仙凡之间》对外开放。
On May 18, 2017, three permanent exhibitions of Phase-II, namely Over the Southern Sea,A Remote Border Region, and Living in a Fairyland, were opened to the public.
